Happy Spring by Christine Fischer-Stoess

Tuesday, September 06, 2016 : Catherine-Anne Walsh

Hello everyone! I’m excited because this week I have just realised that not only is Spring around the corner—it’s here!!  Last Thursday was THE day! In all of my anticipation I may have even missed the official start…. I love Spring, the days get longer, the sun stays out later and I fire up the old Webber Q! Now, I hope you are going to be having as much fun this Spring as I plan to, and I have a few tips for you about taking care of your teeth!

The obvious ones about flossing and brushing all still apply—please floss at least once every day and brush your teeth twice daily with a toothpaste with fluoride in it. Now, if you happen to find yourself having much too much fun at the afternoon cricket match and heaven forbid an injury to your teeth or mouth should occur, do not panic! If you knock out a tooth, have all league play suspended immediately until your precious tooth is recovered!! Once found, carefully clean it off and re-insert into your mouth. If this is all too ghastly for you to manage, get to the nearest dentist or the emergency department at the hospital. Place the tooth in some milk or water for while it travels with you, in a water bottle if you don’t have anything else. It will protect your tooth while you travel and help keep you from losing it on the way! For more details on how to manage a mouth injury go to: http://www.ada.org.au/Your-Dental-Health/Adults-31-64/Sports-and-First-Aid

Now, after all the potential excitement of a mouth injury, we could perhaps regroup and go back to where we should have started: preventing the potential mouth injury.  How do you prevent a potential mouth injury, you ask? By wearing a sports mouthguard, replies the dental team! We can make you a custom fit mouthguard here in the office and let me assure you, they are very on trend!  Further reading on sports mouthguards can be accessed on the ADA website at: http://www.ada.org.au/Your-Dental-Health/Adults-31-64/Mouthguards

Hopefully this hasn’t convinced you to ride the bench for the rest of the season but in all seriousness, we know that accidents do occur and when we can try to prevent them, all the better!  Have a safe and Happy Spring!
